Starting in 1993 and for a period of approximately 2 years, Ecowaste received "fines" from a dry material recycling facility operated by Browning-Ferris Industries Ltd. The fines were 2" minus material collected from a finger screen at start of the processing line, and consisted of a variety of materials including paper and cardboard scrapes, dirt, fine vegetative material (such as leaves) as well as non-compostible material, mainly plastics in various forms.
The material was windrow composted and when complete, used on the landfill as intermediate cover and fill. A review of the process, including testing of the material, was done by an outside consultant.
The composting of this material was discontinued when changes were made to the operation of the material recycling facility.
