Soil Bioremediation

Under our Operational Certificate MR-04922, initially under Approval AS-15797, and later under Permit PS-16142, facilities for the short term storage and treatment (through bioremediation) of contaminated soil have been established on the Richmond Landfill. These facilities are operated by:

Permit PS-16142 issued June 9, 2000 authorizes a special waste storage and treatment facility for the following substances (as specified in the Hazardous Waste Regulation):

The maximum concentration of the approved substances is 10%. The maximum quantity of Special Waste to be stored is 60,000 tonnes.

The characteristics of the soil accepted at the facility for treatment under Operational Certificate MR-04922 are:

Total benzene 25 mg/kg max.
Total ethylbenzene 250 mg/kg max.
Total toluene 150 mg/kg max.
Total xylenes 250 mg/kg max.
VPH 2 500 mg/kg max.
LEPH 25 000 mg/kg max.
HEPH 70 000 mg/kg max.

VPH means volatile petroleum hydrocarbons, excluding benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene and xylenes.
LEPH means light extractable petroleum hydrocarbons, excluding polyaromatic hydrocarbons.
HEPH means heavy extractable petroleum hydrocarbons, excluding polyaromatic hydrocarbons.

Generally, metals levels must be below the Industrial levels as established by Provincial Standards (Contaminated Sites Regulation), although levels above the Industrial levels will be considered on a case by case basis. Note that soil with contaminate levels greater than those given in the table above (extracted from Operational Certificate MR-04922) may be acceptable for bioremediation under Permit PS-16142.
